Gov. Josh Shapiro got what amounted to about a half hour of free airtime on national TV when he appeared on “The Late Show” Thursday night with Stephen Colbert. There were no tough questions — nothing about Israel or Colbert’s abrupt firing by CBS ahead of the Trump administration’s approval of its deal with Paramount — or even a nudge about Shapiro’s possible presidential aspirations.

The potential 2028 presidential candidate says he regularly visits Pennsylvania communities that Democrats do not commonly frequent, and delivers on his promises to them.

Shapiro's appearance on the show comes days after the announcement that Paramount has cancelled The Late Show and as the 2026 governor's race heats up.

Shapiro, a Democrat who represents the pivotal swing state narrowly won by Trump in last November’s election, accused the Republican of only showing up to make promises to blue-collar communities when he needs their vote and neglecting their concerns since returning to power.

The budget for the governor’s office as a whole increased by 68% in Shapiro’s first two-and-half years in office, from just below $7 million during Wolf’s last year in office to $11.6 million.
