No deal yet on EU climate targets

Adopted in 2021, the European climate law sets a climate neutrality target by 2050 and a 2030 objective of reducing net emissions by at least 55 percent compared to 1990 levels. The European Commission put forward a proposal in July to amend the law to set a 2040 target.
On 22 October 2025, Parliament voted on amendments to the Council's position and thus adopted its reading of the Union budget for 2026, aiming at a higher budget that better matches the EU's key priorities than the European Commission’s draft.
The new European regulation also covers the maritime transport of industrial plastic granules for the first time, extending the responsibility of polluters and imposing strict rules for the prevention and reporting of incidents.
The European Commission on Tuesday adopted its annual Enlargement Package, which reaffirms that the momentum for enlargement stands high on the priority agenda of the European Union, while the accession of new member states is increasingly within reach.
Millions of Europeans voted for candidates to serve five-year terms in a new European Parliament, the legislative branch of the 27-member trade bloc. Provisional results from the voting that ended Sunday showed the Christian Democrats would have 189 seats, up 13, the Social Democrats 135, down 4 and the pro-business Renew group 83, down 19. The Greens slumped to 53, down 18.
