Democratic lawmakers are condemning Florida’s new Everglades immigration detention center after making a state-arranged visit.

Dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” the massive tent detention complex built deep in the Florida Everglades can hold 3,000 and could be the template for other facilities in other states.

Numerous accounts of lack of showers, overflowing toilets, and inability to meet with lawyers are emerging from the detention center in the middle of the Everglades.

The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida is seeking to join a federal lawsuit aimed at halting the construction and operation of a new immigration detention facility in the Everglades, which tribal members consider their sacred ancestral homelands.
