The lone run for the Padres before the top of the ninth inning came in the top of the third inning. Martin Maldonado led off the top of the third inning with a double. He later scored when Luis Arraez hit a one-out single to right field for the first run of the game for San Diego.
In need of outfield help, the Padres have been linked to Miami Marlins outfielder Kyle Stowers, who has broken out as a legitimate All-Star level bat. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller detailed why he believes the Padres make sense for the Marlins’ slugger.
San Diego took the opener, 2-1, with both runs coming in the second inning off a Manny Machado double and Jackson Merrill single. The Padres are now 3-1 since the All-Star break, while Miami has dropped two straight and is 2-2 since the break.
