The heavy metal icon has died at 76 after years of health struggles. His last show was just a few weeks ago and featured a special reunion for fans.
After the announcement that the Black Sabbath frontman and "Prince of Darkness" died at the age of 76, fans began passing around a recent performance of the musician's hit song, "Mama, I'm Coming Home" on social media.
Born John Michael Osbourne, the English musician rose to fame as the so-called Prince of Darkness with his heavy metal band, Black Sabbath, which he co-founded in 1968. The band released popular hits like “Paranoid,” “Iron Man” and “War Pigs.”
Osbourne presided over a bill that gave equal representation to almost every strain of metal that Black Sabbath begat, its diversity illustrating how the band didn’t just make a scene: They forged a subculture.
With tears in his makeup-shadowed eyes, Osbourne, the ailing and retiring frontman for Black Sabbath, raged against the twilight of the metal gods.
The late legend is survived by his first wife, Thelma Riley and their children, Jessica, Lewis and adopted son Eliot. With Sharon, he shares kids Aimee, Jack and Kelly - the latter of whom the heavy metal pioneer got to see get engaged to Slipknot's Sid Wilson at Black Sabbath's goodbye show.
The news came just weeks after Ozzy performed his final concert with the band in Birmingham, England, on July 5. Over 40,000 fans — including celebrities like Jason Momoa and Steven Tyler — were in attendance to witness the “Prince of Darkness” rock out one last time.
After Ozzy shaped the sound of heavy metal, he became a reality TV star. Here's a look back at the iconic moments from his MTV show, "The Osbournes."
