Holocaust survivor Arye Ephrath z”l was born in a basement on April 7, 1942, weeks after the first deportations of Slovak Jews to Auschwitz had begun, to Miriam and Shmuel Friedman. That spring and summer, Slovak authorities rounded up tens of thousands of Slovak Jews for deportation. His parents decided it would be best for Miriam and Arye to hide in Budapest, even though Hungary was also an ally of Nazi Germany. In Aug 1944, the Germans invaded Slovakia and began rounding up Jews. #DontBeABystander: Thankfully, Ján Mierni, a shepherd, and his wife Irena risked their lives and agreed to take in Arye and his brother, Tzvi. However, to avoid suspicion, Jan required the boys to dress as girls. Arye compiled and was allowed to help out on the farm. Tzvi did not and was restricted to the house.
